The Jewish Story Project's mission is to record, transcribe and preserve personal narratives and meaningful conversations from the lives of Jewish people and families for future generations. This is done by providing tools, guidance and support for parents, children, grandparents, relatives, and friends to record meaningful conversations about their lives.
The Jewish Story Project uses successful models of Jewish Oral History Projects and secular organizations such as StoryCorps. It is designed to inspire local Jewish families and friends to share their stories in a way that increases understanding and digitally preserves their voice for future generations.
Today's smart phone technology has put high-resolution video recording ability into the hands of teenagers, adults, and seniors everywhere. The JSP will show people how easy it is to use their phones to record family interviews. It will provide instructional support to help get them get started. The project's website and YouTube channel will provide a free permanent showcase and archive for interviews and stories. People will be able to save their content at home on their own devices and web space. They also be able to use the projects web site and channel to easily share and showcase the content they created.
Focusing on local San Francisco Bay Area Jewish community families, the project intends to create a regional archive of recorded stories that are accessible through cloud hosting of indexed digital files. At the same time a decentralized preservation will happen through the individual people who tell, save, and share their stories with their friends and families.
The project actively seeks to advance the benefits of intergenerational relationships and communication that include wisdom, knowledge, and experience from older generations, with enthusiasm and dynamism from younger generations. The goal is better understanding and appreciation of each other, building stronger family ties, and more resilient Jewish communities.
Chabad SF a non-profit 501-C-3 organization (#94-3003612), is the City's first and primary Chabad Jewish Center. It is part of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, one of the largest Jewish religious organizations with over 3,000 Chabad houses worldwide.
The JSP will initially get started by creating a base of recorded stories from the friends and families associated with Chabad House of SF, and the over 40-plus Chabad Houses in Northern California. This will quickly establish a strong base of recorded stories to inspire broader participation and growth.
The JSP will collaborate with the Jewish Community Library in San Francisco and media groups such as the J. Weekly to make its archive of stories, services, and tools, widely known and available.
Once established, the JSP can serve as a model that can be replicated in other Jewish communities, both nationally and internationally. For example, Chabad SF's original Bill Graham Menorah Project has been successfully replicated with large Chanukah menorahs lit every year in Paris, London, Singapore, Berlin, Moscow, and in cities across the United States.
